Story:
Ban Mae Kae Village
Ban Mae Kae is situated in Ngao district of Lampang province about 190 kilometers east of Chiang Mai. It is a Mien (Yao) village composed of 80 houses with a total population of 400 people. The village is accessible by car in dry seasons and only four-wheel driver car can reach the village. The adults who can speak and understand Thai are less than 60% but children and young people can read and write as they can go to the local government schools for formal education.
Sources of village income represent 70% from agriculture, 30% from sales of crafts, domestic animals and seasonal income from sales of labour. Almost all women are involving making craft items such as traditional designs of cross-stitch pieces which we make many modified items for domestic and overseas sales.
Thai Tribal Crafts started to work with 13 artisans in this village in 2003. Under the guidance of Thai Tribal Crafts the Mien artisans in this village are capable of making crafts of export quality. The family income from sales of crafts items to Thai Tribal Crafts is estimated around 15% of total income..
